Using a Collaborative Virtual Role-Play Environment to Foster Characterisation in Stories
نویسنده
چکیده
This article reports the results of a field study evaluation of a virtual role-play environment, Ghostwriter, which was designed as a preparation activity for writing stories. It examines the effects Ghostwriter has on characterisation in chil-dren's imaginative writing. Ghostwriter is based on a commercial computer game. Two children and one role-play leader interact with each other in a perceptually realistic virtual world. Each role-player controls an avatar representing a character in the adventure story. Children can move these avatars around in the virtual world, and can communicate with others by sending and receiving typed messages. The virtual role-play environment was evaluated in a field study with 60 children aged between 10-12 years. The char-acterisation in stories written after using Ghostwriter was compared to the characterisation in stories written under normal classroom circumstances. The stories were compared using a new, fine-grained analysis scheme for assessing chil-dren's writing. The main result is that the stories written after

Interactive experience in a virtual world. We take the line that children need to be both engaged in the action through role play and given the opportunity to reflect on the significance of their actions to understand something of their significance in terms of both the narrative and its ethical significance. This requires a system that incorporates the children’s actions into the unfolding plo...
متن کاملA Multi-Player Educational Game for Story Writing
In this short paper, a multi-player interactive game called STORYWORLD BUILDER is described. The game enables children to collaboratively build a virtual “story world” and then role-play characters in that world. The educational purpose of the system is to motivate children to write better stories, by providing them with a collaborative, interactive, computer game-like environment in which stor...

In this paper we will discuss different types of control over synthetic characters in interactive stories. We will argue that, to attain a deeper and more engaging control, in certain conditions, users should be able to inspect, disclose, and modify the characters minds. To illustrate this idea, we will present a collaborative virtual environment called Teatrix, designed for children to build t...

$%675$&7 We describe the several possibilities of using storytelling in an Augmented Reality Environment to support the collaborative experience of the users in those environments. We start with the motivation of a lack of storytelling and experience in Collaborative Virtual Environments. As an implication of the need for such experiences, we give a general definition of Interactive Storytellin...
متن کاملThe child behind the character
This paper presents our research approach for guidance and control of a story character by young children. With this approach we argue that it is possible for a child to be at the same time an actor performing a role in the story and a engaged and empathic spectator of the overall story. To illustrate the approach we will describe Teatrix a collaborative virtual environment for story creation b...
